I purchased a Savage in March, 1999, through Cycle-by-net.com. It was an untitled 1997, with no miles, for $3250(US). That's probably less than my brother has paid in service for his 1996 Harley full-dresser.

I did add a Rifle windshield, and it makes highway travel much more comfortable. As you did, I took a 1/2" drill bit the the back baffle, two holes, and now it sounds like a proper thumper. I also drilled out the plug over the idle screw and truned it out a couple of turns, but it still backfires occasionally, mostly when downshifting for a corner. I've learned to live with it, and even appreciate it -- it sure scares off the minivans!

I put 2K miles on it last summer here in Ohio, and I can't wait to get back on it. The foot of snow on the ground right now just won't go away fast enough for me.

As for reliability, my Savage hasn't required a thing since I got it.

My last bike was a 1977 Honda CB400F pocket rocket, but I guess my age is showing, because I'm having a whole lot more fun on my thumper!
